THE ART OF THE CLOSET CLEAN-OUT - The Swoondle Society

The Art of the Closet Clean-Out

If you're new to Swoondle, you might be starting with a BIG pile of clothes. We know, we've been there. Follow this guide to quickly sort through them. Next thing you know you'll have the outgrown OUT and you'll have credits to start shopping!

1. Put on some tunes. This is essential to stay motivated. Check out Spotify's upbeat, (mostly) kid-appropriate "Cleaning Kit" playlist.

2. Don't be intimidated by the pile. Just pick up one item at a time.

3. Ask yourself the following questions. If you have a younger child or plan to have more, adjust your answers accordingly.

  • Does it still fit?
  • Is it in season? (if not, will it fit when it is in season?)
  • Does it serve a purpose? Will you need it again?
  • Do you like it? Does your kid like it?

4. If you answer YES to ALL of the above, keep it!

5. If you answer NO to ANY of the above, it's time to give it a new home.

  • Is it a family heirloom? If so, store it. Think special holiday outfits, baptism dresses, and hand-knit sweaters from grandma.
  • Has it seen better days? If so, donate or recycle it. Just make sure you don't put it in the trash or regular recycling-- clothing should go to textile recycling.
  • Is it in great condition? If so, SWOONDLE IT! See the list of what we accept here. Make sure items are washed first!

6. Pat yourself on the back, because you're done!

Pro tip:  Swoondle members get a hanger-friendly clean-out bag. Just hang it in your kid's closet and toss in your kid's (washed) items in the bag as they outgrow them.
